Orlando Health Starts Construction of New Orthopedic Complex

Reveals First Look at Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute

ORLANDO, FL (November 17, 2020) – Today Orlando Health leaders and physicians were on-hand to launch the official start of construction of a new orthopedic complex on Orlando Health’s downtown Orlando campus. The health system staged a banner reveal ceremony and provided both in-person and virtual attendees with an exclusive first look at the design of the 370,000 sq. ft. complex which will feature an orthopedic specialty hospital named the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute, a medical pavilion and attached parking garage, set to be built on the southeast corner of Lucerne Terrace and Columbia Street.

“Orlando Health is thrilled as we take this next step in creating this state-of-the-art orthopedic complex which will allow us to usher in the next generation of orthopedic care,” said David Strong, president and CEO, Orlando Health. “Orlando Health is recognized for providing extraordinary care to patients. This facility will allow us to expand our capacity to treat patients not just locally, but throughout the southeastern United States.”

The eight-story, 197,000 sq. ft. specialty hospital will provide Orlando Health surgeons and physicians with a technologically advanced facility dedicated to orthopedic/neurological medicine.  The hospital will have 75 patient beds, 10 virtually connected operating suites that can be used to train surgeons around the world, a bio-skills lab for research/education and conference space suited for hosting medical educational forums.

“This new facility will allow us to provide patients with the latest and safest technologies in orthopedic care,” said George Haidukewych, MD, chief of adult reconstruction and orthopedic trauma and academic chairman of Orlando Health’s orthopedic institute.  “This orthopedic complex coupled with our growing orthopedic residency program will expand Orlando Health’s impact in the world of orthopedics.”

The Journal of American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has ranked Orlando Health’s orthopedic residency program the fourth top academically productive orthopedic surgery program in the nation. In addition to 20 residents, which will expand to 25 by 2023, the program includes three fellowships, one each in orthopedic trauma, pediatric orthopedics, and orthopedic sports medicine, making it one of the most extensive and advanced orthopedic educational programs in the region.

The six-story, 173,000 sq. ft medical pavilion will consist of an ambulatory surgery center and a medical office building. The ambulatory surgery center will bring an additional 12 operating rooms and three minor procedure rooms to the orthopedic complex. The medical office building will feature 63 orthopedic exam rooms, two procedure rooms, four outpatient rehabilitation exam rooms and an outpatient rehabilitation gymnasium. Imaging services including MRI, X-Ray, and CT, as well as a retail pharmacy will also be available on-site.

An attached parking garage with up to 1000 parking spaces for patients and guests rounds out the $341 million construction project.

“This orthopedic complex has been meticulously designed to meet the increasing demand for orthopedic services in Central Florida and beyond. We expect the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute to be the standard by which all other orthopedics programs will be measured,” said Mr. Strong.

The development of the orthopedic complex is expected to generate more than 1,000 full-time construction jobs. Construction of the medical pavilion is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2023, with hospital construction being completed by the Summer of 2023. Once fully operational, the facility will create more than 500 new permanent healthcare jobs.
