By far, pedicle screws are the most common implant used in spinal surgery. Unfortunately, unacceptably high rates of pedicle screw misplacements in the vertebra persist, which can lead to dramatic neurologic and vascular impairment, such as paralysis and death. But in a Third World country such as Belize, surgeons do not have access to expensive medical equipment to ensure that pedicle screws are placed properly in the spine’s vertebra.
