UAB opens the world’s third clinic for rare spinal disorder

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has formed the world’s third clinic to treat a rare spinal condition called transverse myelitis, which is similar to multiple sclerosis.

The Transverse Myelitis Clinic within UAB’s Spain Rehabilitation Center came online with the help of Mike Jezdimir, a 48-year-old patient who has suffered from the disease since he was 17. Jezdimir met with with two UAB researchers who started conversations with the Transverse Myelitis Association on the best ways to form a new clinic.

“This is a game changer for those of us with transverse myelitis and for UAB,” Jezdimir said.
