IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Interventional Spine today announced the first U.S. implantation of its 3rd Generation Opticage Expandable Interbody Fusion device. The next generation system is an enhanced version of the original Opticage system that was introduced in 2012.
The new Opticage system provides surgeons with an improved option when conducting lumbar fusions on patients. The new implant provides all the beneficial features of the first generation Opticage, such as tactile feel, continuously adjustable and reversible height, and superior graft contact and containment as compared to competitive expandable interbody cages. This new “next generation” Opticage, also features an improved ability to deliver graft material through the implant after expansion (a key feature to allow for maximum fusion), and also has a new streamlined profile compared to the previous Opticage System. The company has multiple issued and pending patents on the Opticage design and methods of use. Since the release of the previous-generation system in mid-2012, there have been close to 2,000 implants world-wide with exceptional clinical results, including no clinical subsidence or end-plate fractures.
Dr. Warren Yu, who was the first surgeon to implant the new Opticage, is the Director of Spine Surgery at George Washington UniversityHospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Yu said in a statement that “the improved design is a significant improvement over the previous generation system.” Further commenting, Dr. Yu said “the new Opticage design provides ease of use, a streamlined profile and new ergonomic delivery mechanism.”
Mr. Walter A. Cuevas, Chief Executive Officer of Interventional Spine said, “We would like to thank Dr. Yu for his trust and confidence in our products. We are pleased with Dr. Yu’s experience and outcome in being the first Surgeon in the U.S. to have implanted our next generation system. From our perspective, it is important that we continue to advance surgical outcomes for both patients and surgeons, and to deliver advanced technologies that may enhance patient outcomes with this procedure.”
Interventional Spine will be launching a portfolio of sizes and begin shipping the new Opticage system in January of 2016. Over the course of the next several weeks, Interventional Spine will be training sales distributors regarding the new Opticage system and planning for full commercial launch.
